King Charles III Focuses Christmas Message on Healthcare Workers in Year Marked by Royal Illnesses

King Charles III used his annual Christmas message Wednesday to hail the selflessness of those who have cared for him and the Princess of Wales this year, after both were diagnosed with cancer.

The 76-year-old monarch said he and his family are “continually” impressed by those who dedicate their lives to helping others.

“From a personal point of view, I offer special, heartfelt thanks to the selfless doctors and nurses who this year have supported me and other members of my family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness and have helped provide the strength, care and comfort we have needed,” he said in a prerecorded speech.

The broadcast came several hours after the monarch waved to a large crowd of onlookers who traditionally gather to see the royal family attend Christmas Day services at a church on Sandringham, the estate on the windswept North Sea coast that has served as a family retreat for generations.

The king walked with Queen Camilla as his eldest son, Prince William, Kate and their three children followed. The king’s daughter-in-law, who has slowly returned to public duties after completing chemotherapy, hugged a cancer patient after the service.

Two of Charles’ siblings, Anne, the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, were also in the procession.

Notably absent at St. Mary Magdalene Church was Prince Andrew. The king’s 64-year-old brother has retreated further into the shadows amid news that a Chinese businessman had been barred from the U.K. because of concerns he cultivated links with Andrew on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party.

Andrew, once second in line to the British throne, has become a constant source of tabloid fodder because of his money woes and links to questionable characters, including the late American financier and convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Even after stepping back from public duties, Andrew has continued to appear at family events and his absence from Sandringham suggests a further retreat from the public eye. The king has been under pressure to distance Andrew from the royal family to avoid further embarrassment to the monarchy.

While Andrew said he never discussed anything sensitive with the suspected Chinese spy and had ceased contact with the man as soon as concerns were raised, the scandal raises further questions about his judgment and distracts from the work of the royal family, said Ed Owens, author of “After Elizabeth: Can the Monarchy Save Itself?’’

“The reason why this is a problem for the king is simply that the king is trying to rebrand the monarchy at the moment, centering its focus around him, but also around William, Catherine, what they are trying to do,” Owens said.

“It’s been a very difficult year for the monarchy, not least because of the two cancer diagnoses. And all the positive headlines that the king has been trying to generate of late, unfortunately, are overshadowed by the behavior, the reckless behavior, of his younger brother, who once again finds himself in the headlines.”

The king’s Christmas speech is the third since he ascended the throne after Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, but the first since he was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February.

The monarch’s holiday message is watched by millions of people in the U.K. and across the Commonwealth, with many households timing Christmas lunch around it.

The king’s treatment, which is believed to be ongoing, forced him to step away from public appearances for two months. He has slowly returned to public life in recent months and was in good spirits on a tour of Australia and the South Pacific in October.

A few weeks after Charles began treatment, the Princess of Wales announced her own cancer diagnosis, which sidelined her for much of the year.

In a voiceover for her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey, which was recorded this month but broadcast on Tuesday evening, Kate also reflected on the love and support that she received.

“The Christmas story encourages us to consider the experiences and feelings of others,” she said. “It also reflects our own vulnerabilities and reminds us of the importance of giving and receiving empathy, as well as just how much we need each other in spite of our differences.”

Charles spoke at the Fitzrovia Chapel in central London, which was part of the now-demolished Middlesex Hospital where his first wife, Diana, opened London’s first dedicated ward for those with AIDS.

The king had tasked the team organizing the broadcast with finding a site away from the royal estate, and one with health connections, a strong community presence and a place of solace and reflection for those with or without faith.

It’s a rare occasion when the monarch’s Christmas message is not recorded at a royal residence, notably Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. The last time his late mother recorded her message outside the royal estate was in 2006.

Charles also paid his respect to World War II troops who perished on the beaches of northern France as well as the few remaining veterans, many of them centenarians, who attended the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy in June.

He said it was an “enormous privilege” to meet “the remarkable veterans of that very special generation who gave of themselves so courageously on behalf of us all” but that the specter of war was haunting the world this Christmas.

“During previous commemorations, we were able to console ourselves with the thought that these tragic events seldom happen in the modern era,” he said. “But on this Christmas Day, we cannot help but think of those for whom the devastating effects of conflict in the Middle East, in Central Europe, in Africa and elsewhere pose a daily threat to so many people’s lives and livelihoods.”

On the domestic front, the king expressed his “deep sense of pride” for communities that came together after riots broke out in many towns and cities in the summer following a stabbing rampage at a dance class that left three girls dead and several wounded.

Azerbaijani Airliner With 67 People Onboard Crashes in Kazakhstan Leaving 32 Survivors

Azerbaijani passenger plane crashes near Kazakh city of Aktau

An Azerbaijani airliner with 67 people onboard crashed Wednesday near the Kazakhstani city of Aktau, leaving at least 32 survivors, according to officials. More than 30 people may be dead.

The plane was en route from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus.

Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry said in a Telegram statement that those on board included five crew. A total of 29 survivors, including two children, have been hospitalized, the ministry told Russia’s state news agency, RIA Novosti.

Another Russian news agency, Interfax quoted medical workers as saying that four bodies have been recovered and emergency workers at the scene as saying that both pilots, according to a preliminary assessment, died in the crash.

The Embraer 190 aircraft made an emergency landing 3 km from the city, Azerbaijan Airlines said earlier.

Kazakhstan’s Emergency Ministry initially said 25 people survived the crash, later revising that number to 27, 28, and then 29 as the search and rescue operation continued at the site of the crash, bringing the supposed death toll down.

The Prosecutor General’s Office in Azerbaijan later reported that at least 32 people survived the crash, adding that the number wasn’t final. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that some of them were in critical condition.

The number of survivors could mean that over 30 people may be dead.

According to Kazakhstani officials, those aboard the plane included 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russian nationals, six Kazakhstani and three Kyrgyzstani citizens, it said.

RIA Novosti quoted Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, as saying that preliminary information showed that the pilot had chosen to divert to Kazakhstan’s Aktau after a bird strike on the aircraft led to “an emergency situation on board”.

Mobile phone footage circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a steep descent before smashing into the ground in a fireball. Other footage showed part of its fuselage ripped away from the wings and the rest of the aircraft, lying upside in the grass. The footage corresponded to the plane’s colors and its registration number.

Some of the videos posted on social media showed survivors dragging fellow passengers away from the wreckage of the plane.

Flight-tracking data from FlightRadar24.com showed the aircraft making what appeared to be a figure-right once nearing the airport in Aktau, its altitude moving up and down substantially over the last minutes of the flight before impacting the ground.

FlightRadar24 separately said in an online post that the aircraft had faced “strong GPS jamming” which ” made the aircraft transmit bad ADS-B data”, referring to the information that allows flight-tracking websites to follow planes in flight. Russia has been blamed in the past for jamming GPS transmissions in the wider region.

In a statement, Azerbaijan Airlines said it would keep members of the public updated and changed its social media banners to solid black.

Azerbaijan’s state news agency, Azertac, said that an official delegation consisting of Azerbaijan’s emergency situations minister, the country’s deputy general prosecutor, and the vice president of Azerbaijan Airlines had been dispatched to Aktau to conduct an “on-site investigation”.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who had been traveling to Russia, returned to Azerbaijan on hearing news of the crash, the president’s press service said. Aliyev was due to attend an informal meeting of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a bloc of former Soviet countries founded after the collapse of the Soviet Union, in St. Petersburg.

Aliyev expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in a statement on social media. “It is with deep sadness that I express my condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” he wrote.

He also signed a decree declaring Dec. 26 a day of mourning in Azerbaijan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Aliyev on the phone and expressed his condolences, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Speaking at the CIS meeting in St. Petersburg, Putin also said that Russia’s Emergency Ministry sent a plane with equipment and medical workers to Kazakhstan to assist with the aftermath of the crash.

Kazakhstani, Azerbaijani and Russian authorities said they were investigating the crash. Embraer told The Associated Press in a statement that the company is “ready to assist all relevant authorities.”

A Complete Unknown Misses a Key Part of 1960s History

Bob Dylan Goes Electric

Toward the end of A Complete Unknown, the new film chronicling Bob Dylan’s early career, Pete Seeger and the young Dylan have a quiet but tense encounter. Anticipating Dylan “going electric” at the 1965 Newport festival, Seeger offers Dylan an extended metaphor about people working together for social justice, each person bringing a spoonful of sand to outweigh the force of injustice. Dylan, says Seeger, brought a shovel, with his powerful folk songs like “Masters of War” and “The Times They Are A-Changing.” Dylan rejects Seeger’s sermon, takes the stage, and blasts the old folk establishment with his electric Stratocaster.

According to the film, the Seeger-Dylan clash reflects the broader conflict between a musical tradition born out of the Old Left that brought together folk music and social justice causes, and the rise of a new musical sound, more experimental, far less political, and more closely keyed to the angry emotions of young Americans. It was, claims the book on which the movie is based, “the night that broke the Sixties.”

Not quite. There were a lot of things that “broke” the 1960s besides rock and roll: Black Power, Second Wave Feminism, drugs, and perhaps most significantly, the war in Vietnam, which also divided the folk music world. While popular memory of the 1960s assumes that folk fans and performers marched hand-in-glove with the anti-war protesters of the 1960s, in reality, the political climate of that moment, as well as the intensified commercialism of folk music, disrupted that alliance.

I have a historical interest in these events, and also a personal connection. My father, Irwin Silber, co-founded Sing Out! magazine in 1951, along with his close colleague, Pete Seeger. By the late 1950s, Sing Out! had become the go-to magazine for countless folkies—like the popular folk trio of Peter, Paul, and Mary; newer performers like Tom Paxton; and the “star” of the folk movement, Joan Baez. Long involved with left-wing causes, Sing Out! was also aligned with struggles for racial justice and international peace. My father wrote an irritated critique of Dylan in November 1964, chiding him for turning away from “protest” songs as he became more attached to the “paraphernalia of fame.”

But what concerned him most, in the summer of 1965, was not Dylan, but Vietnam. LBJ, having secured congressional backing in 1964 to promote U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia, had dramatically increased U.S. troop presence in Vietnam from 23,000 to 184,000 and began an intense bombing campaign against North Vietnam in February.

Feeling the urgency of these events, Silber wrote to Pete Seeger ten days before Newport to discuss plans for a massive concert against this growing military escalation in Vietnam. Silber hoped to showcase several musical genres, including the Paul Butterfield band, several of whose members would be part of Dylan’s electrified backup band at Newport. At least in this “traditional” folkie’s mind, there was no meaningful divide between acoustic and electric. Rather it was about mobilizing music, no matter the form it took, to protest the war. In this way, Silber, not unlike Seeger, looked back to a tradition of joining music to political causes, whether it was the “Hootenannies” that protested the “Red Scare” in the 1950s, or the songs of the Black Freedom movement. The music in those cases had been broadly defined as “folk music,” although it often included blues, as well as singers who performed updated versions of popular standards.

The concert—held the autumn after Newport on Sept. 24, 1965, at Carnegie Hall and ultimately dubbed “A Sing-In For Peace”—played to a sold-out crowd of over 5000 attendees. Supporters included Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, civil rights champion Fannie Lou Hamer, music critic Nat Hentoff, and over 60 musical performers, some of whom hewed more closely to “rock” than “folk.” At the end of the evening’s events, hundreds of attendees marched downtown to Greenwich Village to press their demands about military deescalation. Silber praised the way performers helped and supported one another, with each artist contributing to a larger “pattern that would most effectively address their government at a moment of urgency.”

This was an overly optimistic assessment on Silber’s part; the issue of Vietnam had already divided those on the folk scene. Peter, Paul and Mary, committed performers for Black freedom, were conspicuously absent from the event. Concert planners heard that the folk trio feared their civil rights work would be less “effective” if they took a stand on Vietnam. One-time supporters of the “Sing-In,” including Dylan and Odetta, also ended up being no-shows. Notably, they were managed by Albert Grossman—a highly unsympathetic figure in A Complete Unknown—who likely believed that anti-war protests were bad for business. By 1965, civil rights work had earned a public stamp of approval, even from the White House. Opposition to the war in Vietnam clearly had not.

Not only did some performers, and their managers, object to an alliance between folk music and anti-war messages, so did many readers of Sing Out! Some were outraged to find foreign policy issues in its pages. With memories of Soviet actions during the Cuban Missile Crisis still fresh in popular memory, many saw the U.S. war in Vietnam strictly as a fight against Soviet- style communism. These readers had cheered Sing Out!’s position on racial justice, but Vietnam signaled a break.

As it traces Bob Dylan’s career in the early 1960s, culminating with his electrified performance at Newport, A Complete Unknown gestures towards some of the political chaos of the era, mainly with fleeting glances at JFK’s assassination or the 1963 March on Washington. The film has even less to say about Vietnam, making it hard to fully understand the substance behind the tensions of this moment.

In the Summer of 1965, Vietnam was, for some, an issue to be avoided: it was a messy political question that might also be bad for business. Yet for many others, the summer of ’65 presented a moment of reckoning: not about choosing acoustic or electric, but about responding to a brutal and unjust U.S. military escalation abroad.

A Complete Unknown Celebrates the Dazzling Unknowability of Bob Dylan: Man, Legend, Jerk

The Bob Dylan of James Mangold’s extraordinary anti-biopic A Complete Unknown—who may or may not be an accurate version of the real Bob Dylan—is a jerk. He blows into New York in 1961, at age 19, having hitched a ride in a station wagon with just a rucksack and guitar in tow. He wastes not a minute looking for his idol, Woody Guthrie. “I want to meet Woody,” he says. “Maybe catch a spark.” He finds Guthrie not in New York but in a New Jersey hospital, suffering from Huntington’s disease, wasting away and unable to speak. The young visitor is polite and deferential—but he still wants his spark. He also meets Guthrie’s close friend, the revered, humble folk singer Pete Seeger, who brings this reedy, awkward kid home with him when he realizes he has nowhere to sleep. (The youngster nearly tromps into the family’s modest, welcoming house without removing his shoes.) Not long after, young Bob encounters the already-getting-famous Joan Baez, and begins, at least semi-consciously, hitching his wobbly little wagon to her star. Then he meets an intelligent folk enthusiast named Sylvie Russo and charms his way into her bed. He’ll go on to treat both women badly. Meanwhile, people hear him sing—if you can call what he does singing, a kind of disruptive nasal sine wave that seems to open a crack in the earth—and he begins to get everything he wished for when he left the kid formerly known as Robert Zimmerman behind in Hibbing, Minn.

That’s a lot for a movie to hold, but it’s not even half of what happens in A Complete Unknown, a scrappy, semi-unflattering patchwork portrait that serves its subject better than any fawning hagiography could. The movie covers Dylan’s early years in New York; it was drawn from Elijah Wald’s 2015 Dylan Goes Electric!, a book Dylan himself recently praised in one of his delightfully random shooting-star Tweets. The movie’s script is by Jay Cocks (one of Martin Scorsese’s frequent collaborators, as well as a former TIME film critic), and reportedly, Dylan himself went through the screenplay line-by-line. Whether that’s myth or truth doesn’t really matter: There’s something about A Complete Unknown that pushes against traditional Dylan worship and cuts a path toward something far more beautiful, flawed, and human. In my brief era as a baby rock critic, circa the late 1980s, I remember going to parties and standing in a circle of guys, always guys, who would discuss the attributes of various Dylan bootlegs in hushed, somber tones. I loved Bob Dylan, as I will until the minute my heart stops beating. But as well-intentioned as this guy-cataloging of Dylan’s work might have been, it always felt to me like strip-mining, an attempt to edit a mystery down to manageable size. And who wants a manageable mystery?

The Dylan of Mangold’s film, played by Timothée Chalamet, is in no way manageable; and like the real Dylan, in public he’s sometimes surly and unpleasant. In Mangold’s hands, this is thrilling, not off-putting. Chalamet’s Dylan appears in Greenwich Village like a scruffy, unlikely vision of the future, a skinny guy in a drab green jacket and tattered muffler. He speaks in a stammering stream, but his thoughts only seem meandering: there’s something disarmingly direct and determined about him. This is a guy who clearly wants a persona, but how do you get one? That’s something he’s still trying to figure out.

When he visits Guthrie in that hospital in New Jersey, Woody’s devoted friend Seeger is there, too, and as the newcomer meets their unspoken challenge by singing “Song for Woody” for them, both men—even Guthrie, in his weakened state—see there’s something special about him. Guthrie is played by Scoot McNairy: he’s wiry and irascible, peering angrily from the dim depths of his hospital bed, clearly frustrated by his inability to communicate verbally. Edward Norton plays Pete Seeger, his face as open as a sunflower. He’s hokey, folksy, and endearing; he’s also one of the people who made Dylan happen, and Norton, in this wonderful performance, captures that spirit of casual generosity.

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN

Then Dylan starts playing in the small village folk clubs, sometimes opening for bigger, better-known performers. That’s how he meets Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro, in a fantastic, astute performance. Baez, in a woolly schoolgirl plaid dress and cute little pumps, is chilling the marrow of every person in the house with a shivery, willowy version of “House of the Rising Sun.” Afterward, Dylan delivers his impish verdict: “She’s pretty. Sings pretty. Maybe a little too pretty. Hmmph.” This is how a guy both praises a woman and cuts her down to size; the Dylan of A Complete Unknown does this a lot. See? Jerk.

Right around this time, Dylan also meets a smart and dewy-beautiful young student and artist, someone who knows just as much about traditional American folk music as he does. Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, Dylan’s early and most influential girlfriend. (This character’s real-life counterpart is Suze Rotolo, who died in 2011, leaving behind a glorious 2008 memoir and cultural history, A Freewheelin’ Time. Reportedly, Dylan didn’t want Rotolo’s real name used in the movie, as a way of respecting her privacy even after death.) He seduces her by offering her a peanut, claiming, of course falsely, that he survived on a steady diet of them while traveling with a carnival. Later, after the two watch the great Bette Davis film Now, Voyager, he lights two cigarettes in his mouth at once, a la Paul Henreid: he can charm as well as bamboozle.

Sylvie is no one’s fool, but she falls hard for this guy, trusting him even when he shouldn’t. His star rises as hers merely shines steady. As Fanning plays Sylvie, she’s as self-possessed as a summer breeze. No wonder Dylan attempts to return to her, even after he betrays her. Yet Sylvie walks away from him when she needs to, a woman who finds herself on the wrong side of an artist. That’s no place anyone would want to live.

Somewhere in there, Dylan writes “Blowin’ in the Wind” in a rumpled bed, wearing only his underpants. Genius lives in the margins, and A Complete Unknown gets that. I’ve heard some criticism that the movie relegates the women in Dylan’s life to the margins, but I’d argue that they’re the movie’s core: they’re more interesting than he is because unlike him, they live in the real world. He’s so busy living through his art—which, admittedly, turned out to be pretty great—that there’s almost no man there. This is the genius of Chalamet’s performance. He doesn’t so much grab at the center of the film as melt right into it. It’s true that he captures the cadence of Dylan’s speech perfectly, and he also does his own singing—his versions of these familiar songs are like shimmering mirages of the originals, seductive in their own right. But let’s face it: Dylan is easy to impersonate, so much so that when we hear the real Bob Dylan, it’s almost as if he’s impersonating himself. (This may also be the key to the almost scientifically provable fact that as many times as the real Dylan has sung his own songs across decades of touring, he has never performed any of them the same way twice.) Chalamet gets at something more elusive than mere impersonation. As Dylan, there are moments when his eyes look as dark and flat as a freshly cleaned chalkboard, as if he were protecting the swirling contents of his brain from invaders and interlopers—even, maybe, the women in his life.

The real Dylan is a well-known spinner of fanciful fictions, and not just in his songs. Even the title of his 2004 memoir Chronicles: Volume One is a wry joke: don’t hold your breath for Volume Two. But his refusal to adhere to facts isn’t constricting. Instead, it’s freeing, inviting us to invent our own Bob Dylan: maybe he actually wants us to improve on the real, fallible one. (That’s part of what Scorsese did with his delightful 2019 neo-documentary Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story.) Is it possible that Dylan read certain lines of the A Complete Unknown script and thought to himself, “This is correct, I was such an asshole”? And if so, what does that say about the real Dylan, a man and artist who, at age 83, has become so much larger than life that any attempt to fully understand his true nature, let alone his art, is doomed to failure?

James Mangold already has some practice making movies about unknowable legends: his 2005 portrait of Johnny Cash, Walk the Line, understood Cash as a figure beyond anything so pedestrian as comprehension. (Cash also figures in A Complete Unknown: he’s played, with louche, sexy, bravado, by Boyd Holbrook.) Similarly, A Complete Unknown won’t help you understand Bob Dylan any better, and the movie contains elisions and outright fabrications that are likely to put certain knickers in a twist. Dylan purists revere their facts, and the fact that Dylan was heckled with the epithet “Judas!” at the 1966 Royal London Hall concert, and not at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival performance, as the movie avers, will surely not escape their gimlet gaze.

But come, now: gimlets are for drinking, for celebration, for pleasure, and A Complete Unknown is, too. Like a Dylan song, it doesn’t scorn myriad interpretations; it invites them. Just before Chalamet-Dylan writes that now-famous protest song from his palace of an unmade bed, he strums his guitar and says to no one in particular—certainly not to the woman who has just risen from that bed, Barbaro-Baez—“These are chords I learned from a cowboy named Wigglefoot.” Believe him at your peril. Believe it all. That’s what you do when you fall in love with an artist, a song, a jerk. The fact-checked heart is no heart at all.

Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Talks to Margaret Atwood About Reading The Handmaid’s Tale in an Iranian Prison

Narges Mohammadi picked up Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid ‘s Tale while in prison. The activist had been sentenced to 16 years for challenging Iran’s enforcement of what Mohammadi terms gender apartheid—a system of dress codes, sexual subjugation, and coercive control enforced, as in Atwood’s book, by men who have taken power as a theocracy.

Mohammadi was still in prison when she won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2023. But in December, after she underwent surgery, Iranian authorities allowed her to return to home on a three-week medical leave. Mohammadi, 52, made the most of her freedom, finally speaking (and singing) to the Nobel committee, giving interviews, posting on social media from the fence at Zanjan Central Prison—and reaching out, through PEN America, to Atwood.

On Dec. 18, TIME and a translator hosted the Canadian author, 85, on a video call with Mohammadi. One woman wrote a book. The other has been living in it.

AI Models Are Getting Smarter. New Tests Are Racing to Catch Up

Despite their expertise, AI developers don’t always know what their most advanced systems are capable of—at least, not at first. To find out, systems are subjected to a range of tests—often called evaluations, or ‘evals’—designed to tease out their limits. But due to rapid progress in the field, today’s systems regularly achieve top scores on many popular tests, including SATs and the U.S. bar exam, making it harder to judge just how quickly they are improving.

A new set of much more challenging evals has emerged in response, created by companies, nonprofits, and governments. Yet even on the most advanced evals, AI systems are making astonishing progress. In November, the nonprofit research institute Epoch AI announced a set of exceptionally challenging math questions developed in collaboration with leading mathematicians, called FrontierMath, on which currently available models scored only 2%. Just one month later, OpenAI’s newly-announced o3 model achieved a score of 25.2%, which Epoch’s director, Jaime Sevilla, describes as “far better than our team expected so soon after release.”

Amid this rapid progress, these new evals could help the world understand just what advanced AI systems can do, and—with many experts worried that future systems may pose serious risks in domains like cybersecurity and bioterrorism—serve as early warning signs, should such threatening capabilities emerge in future.

Harder than it sounds

In the early days of AI, capabilities were measured by evaluating a system’s performance on specific tasks, like classifying images or playing games, with the time between a benchmark’s introduction and an AI matching or exceeding human performance typically measured in years. It took five years, for example, before AI systems surpassed humans on the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge, established by Professor Fei-Fei Li and her team in 2010. And it was only in 2017 that an AI system (Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo) was able to beat the world’s number one ranked player in Go, an ancient, abstract Chinese boardgame—almost 50 years after the first program attempting the task was written.

The gap between a benchmark’s introduction and its saturation has decreased significantly in recent years. For instance, the GLUE benchmark, designed to test an AI’s ability to understand natural language by completing tasks like deciding if two sentences are equivalent or determining the correct meaning of a pronoun in context, debuted in 2018. It was considered solved one year later. In response, a harder version, SuperGLUE, was created in 2019—and within two years, AIs were able to match human performance across its tasks.

Evals take many forms, and their complexity has grown alongside model capabilities. Virtually all major AI labs now “red-team” their models before release, systematically testing their ability to produce harmful outputs, bypass safety measures, or otherwise engage in undesirable behavior, such as deception. Last year, companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google made voluntary commitments to the Biden administration to subject their models to both internal and external red-teaming “in areas including misuse, societal risks, and national security concerns.”

Other tests assess specific capabilities, such as coding, or evaluate models’ capacity and propensity for potentially dangerous behaviors like persuasion, deception, and large-scale biological attacks.

Perhaps the most popular contemporary benchmark is Measuring Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU), which consists of about 16,000 multiple-choice questions that span academic domains like philosophy, medicine, and law. OpenAI’s GPT-4o, released in May, achieved 88%, while the company’s latest model, o1, scored 92.3%. Because these large test sets sometimes contain problems with incorrectly-labelled answers, attaining 100% is often not possible, explains Marius Hobbhahn, director and co-founder of Apollo Research, an AI safety nonprofit focused on reducing dangerous capabilities in advanced AI systems. Past a point, “more capable models will not give you significantly higher scores,” he says.

Designing evals to measure the capabilities of advanced AI systems is “astonishingly hard,” Hobbhahn says—particularly since the goal is to elicit and measure the system’s actual underlying abilities, for which tasks like multiple-choice questions are only a proxy. “You want to design it in a way that is scientifically rigorous, but that often trades off against realism, because the real world is often not like the lab setting,” he says. Another challenge is data contamination, which can occur when the answers to an eval are contained in the AI’s training data, allowing it to reproduce answers based on patterns in its training data rather than by reasoning from first principles.

Another issue is that evals can be “gamed” when “either the person that has the AI model has an incentive to train on the eval, or the model itself decides to target what is measured by the eval, rather than what is intended,” says Hobbahn.

A new wave

In response to these challenges, new, more sophisticated evals are being built.

Epoch AI’s FrontierMath benchmark consists of approximately 300 original math problems, spanning most major branches of the subject. It was created in collaboration with over 60 leading mathematicians, including Fields-medal winning mathematician Terence Tao. The problems vary in difficulty, with about 25% pitched at the level of the International Mathematical Olympiad, such that an “extremely gifted” high school student could in theory solve them if they had the requisite “creative insight” and “precise computation” abilities, says Tamay Besiroglu, Epoch’s associate director. Half the problems require “graduate level education in math” to solve, while the most challenging 25% of problems come from “the frontier of research of that specific topic,” meaning only today’s top experts could crack them, and even they may need multiple days.

Solutions cannot be derived by simply testing every possible answer, since the correct answers often take the form of 30-digit numbers. To avoid data contamination, Epoch is not publicly releasing the problems (beyond a handful, which are intended to be illustrative and do not form part of the actual benchmark). Even with a peer-review process in place, Besiroglu estimates that around 10% of the problems in the benchmark have incorrect solutions—an error rate comparable to other machine learning benchmarks. “Mathematicians make mistakes,” he says, noting they are working to lower the error rate to 5%.

Evaluating mathematical reasoning could be particularly useful because a system able to solve these problems may also be able to do much more. While careful not to overstate that “math is the fundamental thing,” Besiroglu expects any system able to solve the FrontierMath benchmark will be able to “get close, within a couple of years, to being able to automate many other domains of science and engineering.”

Another benchmark aiming for a longer shelflife is the ominously-named “Humanity’s Last Exam,” created in collaboration between the nonprofit Center for AI Safety and Scale AI, a for-profit company that provides high-quality datasets and evals to frontier AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. The exam is aiming to include between 20 and 50 times as many questions as Frontiermath, while also covering domains like physics, biology, and electrical engineering, says Summer Yue, Scale AI’s director of research. Questions are being crowdsourced from the academic community and beyond. To be included, a question needs to be unanswerable by all existing models. The benchmark is intended to go live in late 2024 or early 2025.

A third benchmark to watch is RE-Bench, designed to simulate real-world machine-learning work. It was created by researchers at METR, a nonprofit that specializes in model evaluations and threat research, and tests humans and cutting-edge AI systems across seven engineering tasks. Both humans and AI agents are given a limited amount of time to complete the tasks; while humans reliably outperform current AI agents on most of them, things look different when considering performance only within the first two hours. Current AI agents do best when given between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the agent, explains Hjalmar Wijk, a member of METR’s technical staff. After this time, they tend to get “stuck in a rut,” he says, as AI agents can make mistakes early on and then “struggle to adjust” in the ways humans would.

“When we started this work, we were expecting to see that AI agents could solve problems only of a certain scale, and beyond that, that they would fail more completely, or that successes would be extremely rare,” says Wijk. It turns out that given enough time and resources, they can often get close to the performance of the median human engineer tested in the benchmark. “AI agents are surprisingly good at this,” he says. In one particular task—which involved optimizing code to run faster on specialized hardware—the AI agents actually outperformed the best humans, although METR’s researchers note that the humans included in their tests may not represent the peak of human performance. 

These results don’t mean that current AI systems can automate AI research and development. “Eventually, this is going to have to be superseded by a harder eval,” says Wijk. But given that the possible automation of AI research is increasingly viewed as a national security concern—for example, in the National Security Memorandum on AI, issued by President Biden in October—future models that excel on this benchmark may be able to improve upon themselves, exacerbating human researchers’ lack of control over them.

Even as AI systems ace many existing tests, they continue to struggle with tasks that would be simple for humans. “They can solve complex closed problems if you serve them the problem description neatly on a platter in the prompt, but they struggle to coherently string together long, autonomous, problem-solving sequences in a way that a person would find very easy,” Andrej Karpathy, an OpenAI co-founder who is no longer with the company, wrote in a post on X in response to FrontierMath’s release.

Michael Chen, an AI policy researcher at METR, points to SimpleBench as an example of a benchmark consisting of questions that would be easy for the average high schooler, but on which leading models struggle. “I think there’s still productive work to be done on the simpler side of tasks,” says Chen. While there are debates over whether benchmarks test for underlying reasoning or just for knowledge, Chen says that there is still a strong case for using MMLU and Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A Benchmark (GPQA), which was introduced last year and is one of the few recent benchmarks that has yet to become saturated, meaning AI models have yet to reliably achieve top scores, such that further improvements would be negligible. Even if they were just tests of knowledge, he argues, “it’s still really useful to test for knowledge.”

One eval seeking to move beyond just testing for knowledge recall is ARC-AGI, created by prominent AI researcher François Chollet to test an AI’s ability to solve novel reasoning puzzles. For instance, a puzzle might show several examples of input and output grids, where shapes move or change color according to some hidden rule. The AI is then presented with a new input grid and must determine what the corresponding output should look like, figuring out the underlying rule from scratch. Although these puzzles are intended to be relatively simple for most humans, AI systems have historically struggled with them. However, recent breakthroughs suggest this is changing: OpenAI’s o3 model has achieved significantly higher scores than prior models, which Chollet says represents “a genuine breakthrough in adaptability and generalization.”

The urgent need for better evaluations

New evals, simple and complex, structured and “vibes”-based, are being released every day. AI policy increasingly relies on evals, both as they are being made requirements of laws like the European Union’s AI Act, which is still in the process of being implemented, and because major AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have all made voluntary commitments to halt the release of their models, or take actions to mitigate possible harm, based on whether evaluations identify any particularly concerning harms.

On the basis of voluntary commitments, The U.S. and U.K. AI Safety Institutes have begun evaluating cutting-edge models before they are deployed. In October, they jointly released their findings in relation to the upgraded version of Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, paying particular attention to its capabilities in biology, cybersecurity, and software and AI development, as well as to the efficacy of its built-in safeguards. They found that “in most cases the built-in version of the safeguards that US AISI tested were circumvented, meaning the model provided answers that should have been prevented.” They note that this is “consistent with prior research on the vulnerability of other AI systems.” In December, both institutes released similar findings for OpenAI’s o1 model. 

However, there are currently no binding obligations for leading models to be subjected to third-party testing. That such obligations should exist is “basically a no-brainer,” says Hobbhahn, who argues that labs face perverse incentives when it comes to evals, since “the less issues they find, the better.” He also notes that mandatory third-party audits are common in other industries like finance.

While some for-profit companies, such as Scale AI, do conduct independent evals for their clients, most public evals are created by nonprofits and governments, which Hobbhahn sees as a result of “historical path dependency.” 

“I don’t think it’s a good world where the philanthropists effectively subsidize billion dollar companies,” he says. “I think the right world is where eventually all of this is covered by the labs themselves. They’re the ones creating the risk.”.

AI evals are “not cheap,” notes Epoch’s Besiroglu, who says that costs can quickly stack up to the order of between $1,000 and $10,000 per model, particularly if you run the eval for longer periods of time, or if you run it multiple times to create greater certainty in the result. While labs sometimes subsidize third-party evals by covering the costs of their operation, Hobbhahn notes that this does not cover the far-greater costs of actually developing the evaluations. Still, he expects third-party evals to become a norm going forward, as labs will be able to point to them to evidence due-diligence in safety-testing their models, reducing their liability.

As AI models rapidly advance, evaluations are racing to keep up. Sophisticated new benchmarks—assessing things like advanced mathematical reasoning, novel problem-solving, and the automation of AI research—are making progress, but designing effective evals remains challenging, expensive, and, relative to their importance as early-warning detectors for dangerous capabilities, underfunded. With leading labs rolling out increasingly capable models every few months, the need for new tests to assess frontier capabilities is greater than ever. By the time an eval saturates, “we need to have harder evals in place, to feel like we can assess the risk,” says Wijk.

Mental Health Leveled Up in 2024

Progress in addressing mental health is notoriously slow and mostly incremental. Breakthrough treatments tend to be rare, and trained professionals too few to meet the demand for services, which is increasing. But 2024 was a pivotal year—thanks to the culmination of decades of research and post-pandemic attention to mental-health issues.

In March, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Rejoyn, the first digital therapeutic to treat major depressive disorder. The app opens the door to a new class of therapies that could dramatically increase access to treatment. Six months later, the FDA approved the first new drug for schizophrenia in 30 years, Cobenfy. It targets a different brain chemical system than previous treatments. And psychedelics notched a first when the FDA reviewed a request to approve MDMA for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. Though this bid ultimately failed—the agency wanted to see more research—the FDA remains open to this group of drugs as a promising new way to treat certain mental-health conditions.

These advances come at a time when the need for mental-health services has never been more urgent. About a fifth of teens in the U.S. report symptoms of anxiety or depression, according to the most recently analyzed federal survey data from 2021–22, but 20% say they can’t afford therapy to address their symptoms. The national lifeline for mental-health crises, 988, fielded around 5.3 million calls, texts or chats this year. And the U.S. surgeon general raised the alarm about two major mental-health issues: first calling for warning labels about the dangers of social media for young people, and then highlighting the extraordinary stress and anxiety parents experience in raising families today.

Clearly, more help is needed. “The problem is that there are so few trained personnel,” says Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the school of public health at Brown University and former White House COVID-19 response coordinator. But innovations like those introduced this year can help to ease the load on mental-health professionals. The schizophrenia drug Cobenfy solves a number of problems that plague current treatments, which aren’t very effective and come with such severe side effects that up to half of patients stop taking them—it targets a circuit in the brain that patients seem to tolerate better, and has been shown to reduce symptoms like hallucinations, paranoia, and delusions. That could help more people to get the treatment they need.

Rejoyn, which was approved as a supplement to existing treatments, lets people take their mental health into their own hands through a smartphone app. It prompts users to remember emotions depicted on people’s faces, which requires them to use both the emotional and cognitive processing centers of their brain. In studies, people who used Rejoyn for six weeks showed more balanced activity in these brain centers and had fewer depression symptoms. That “rewiring” may make people more responsive to traditional treatments like cognitive behavior therapy or antidepressants.

These advances may have reached patients in 2024, but they didn’t develop in a year, or even a few. Each took decades of basic scientific research, trial and error, and careful testing in people. That’s true not just of mental-health innovations, but with advances in all areas of medicine: 2024 also saw the first genetically edited pig-to-human kidney transplant, the first patients receiving CRISPR-edited gene therapy for sickle cell disease, the rise of the most powerful medications yet to treat obesity, and unprecedented remissions for the most challenging cancers. “I’ve been following life sciences for decades, and I have never seen acceleration at this level, and spread across so many different areas,” says Dr. Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute.

As the incoming Trump Administration threatens to reduce federal research budgets while shrinking health agencies in the name of efficiency, health experts fear such momentum could slow, ultimately narrowing the treatment pipeline for a number of diseases. The impact might not be felt immediately, but could result in fewer innovations in coming years. “The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an agency that invests in long-term scientific progress,” says Jha. “What I worry about is that if we are going to make a bunch of cuts to NIH, we might not see any negative health effects this year, but it will hurt the next generation more than it will hurt people today. Today’s miracles come from fundamental investments that happened a decade or two decades ago.”

Philanthropists and the private sector could step in to help fill the funding gap. But that may mean the investments won’t be as broad and diverse as government-driven funding, and might prioritize specific conditions, widening the already significant gaps in access to essential health services such as those for mental health.

Even more disturbing than the immediate risk of potential cuts to research budgets is a deeper mistrust in science and scientists that is part of a larger “culture of hostility to expertise,” says Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, vice provost for global initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania, who has served in both the Office of Management and Budget and the NIH. “Someone being an expert in an area used to get them a lot of authority, reverence, and respect. Now it’s more than likely to get them real hostility, name-calling, and denigrating attacks. It’s very distressing, because this is occurring simultaneously as we revel in all the fruits that science is producing.”

Restoring trust in science is necessary to keep up the medical progress that improves lives this and every year. Such advances are critical in mental health, as rates of illness and demand for treatment continues to rise. Innovative developments, including novel treatments and new ways of thinking about how to incorporate digital technologies, are important first steps to increasing access and addressing unmet needs.

Those investments must continue, since in the U.S., “even though we have a lot of health problems, things are starting to get better,” Jha says. “And the reason things are getting better is because of long-term investments into the NIH and the work of public health and biomedical scientists.”
