How Indian Americans Should Treat Modi’s Upcoming New York Rally

"Howdy, Modi" Event Welcomes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Houston, Texas

On Sept. 22, India’s controversial Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to address more than 10,000 Indian Americans in New York City. While Modi no doubt intends this visit to be a victory lap—akin to his 2019 Texas “Howdy Modi” event, hosted jointly with Donald Trump—it ought to be the opposite.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

The Modi government’s virulent Hindu nationalist agenda, which enables violence against religious minorities, cost the Prime Minister in the recent election. With support for his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party greatly diminished and India’s opposition enjoying a higher share of voter support than in years prior, Modi must govern in coalition for the first time. For India, the U.S., and the increasingly intertwined relationship between our two countries, this new check on Modi’s power is a great thing.

Read More: Modi’s Unraveling Has Begun

There has never been a moral case for U.S. support for Modi’s policies from afar, and now there is less of a strategic one. After all, Modi’s coded reference to Muslims as “infiltrators” during the last campaign cycle contributed to a broader wave of political hate-speech and violence in 2024. Modi still has yet to face any real accountability for enabling an anti-Muslim pogrom in 2002.

U.S. officials and everyday Americans alike need to recognize that this is a leader whose days are numbered, and speak out against his authoritarian drift while the global media spotlight falls on him during his latest American tour.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Council members Shekar Krishnan and Shahana Hanif, and New York State Representative Zohran Mamdani have all taken a vital first step, condemning the presence of an anti-Muslim hate symbol at the Modi-allied New York Indian Consulate for the city’s India Day parade on Aug. 18.

An interfaith coalition has also already begun to plan a large protest outside the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, where Modi is slated to speak. Washington state representative Pramila Jayapal has condemned Hindu nationalism on numerous occasions, and she circulated a letter in June signed by dozens of U.S. lawmakers highlighting Modi’s concerning human rights record during his last visit to the U.S. in June. According to Pew Research, a plurality of Americans who know who Modi is “have little or no confidence in his ability to do the right thing regarding world affairs.” Around the world, and especially in Europe, attitudes toward Modi have become more negative.

Indian Americans, local, and national politicians must build off this momentum, bringing up Modi’s sordid record on human rights and democracy during his upcoming visit.

Such a display will have international ramifications. The Indian diaspora has been referred to as “Modi’s secret weapon” for a reason, offering both vital financial and political support for his policies at home. With American diaspora events widely reported in major Indian news outlets, any and all criticism of Modi is bound to resound abroad.

It will also send a powerful message that Modi critics in the diaspora can’t be silenced. Indian Americans have been sent death threats via online BJP trolls, Overseas Citizenship of India card statuses have been revoked, and Indian family members of U.S. citizens have been interrogated. Reporting in The Washington Post has revealed that former Indian intelligence officials targeted several U.S. organizations with wide-reaching disinformation campaigns aimed at Congress to discredit Modi’s American critics. The Indian government was even accused of two assassination plots—one of them deadly—targeting Sikhs on North American soil last year.

Standing up to Modi and his Hindu nationalism may also help improve domestic ties within the Indian American diaspora. A new survey conducted by my organization, the Indian American Council, and ReThink Media, revealed that more than 80% of Indian American Muslim respondents have faced discrimination from their Hindu peers. As one of the survey respondents remarked: “I have lost good, old friends to Islamophobia and hatred brewed by the BJP government.”

One pro-Modi Hindu nationalist organization in the U.S., the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, has sent millions of dollars to its Indian counterpart, which has been accused of orchestrating violence against Muslims. Another pro-Modi Hindu nationalist group, the Global Hindu Heritage Foundation, reportedly hosted a Texas fundraiser to raise money to destroy churches in India. Modi’s U.S. visit is bound to rally organizations whose presence in American communities is profoundly harmful to the diaspora and U.S. at large.

With 50% of Indian Americans supporting Modi compared to 74% of Indians in India, according to a Carnegie Endowment study, it’s about time that his American critics like us make our voice heard. Indian Americans and Americans of all faiths cannot continue to allow Modi to use our country as a platform to legitimize his policies abroad, and to spread hate here at home.

On Modi’s latest U.S. visit, we must use our voices to redirect the U.S.-India relationship in a more productive direction, making it clear that if India is to continue to receive diaspora support, Modi must immediately put an end to his regime’s persecution of minorities, its attacks on the free press, and its attempt to export these hateful policies into the United States.

How to Protect Yourself from AI Election Misinformation

Man with media info noise vector concept

As the 2024 race for President heats up, so too does concern over the spread of AI misinformation in elections.

“It’s an arms race,” says Andy Parsons, senior director of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). And it’s not a fair race: the use of artificial intelligence to spread misinformation is a struggle in which the “bad guys don’t have to open source their data sets or present at conferences or prepare papers,” Parsons says.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

AI misinformation has already become an issue this year. Pop sensation Taylor Swift endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris after former President Donald Trump posted a fake image of her endorsing him. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift stated in the Instagram caption of her Harris endorsement.

The Swift incident isn’t the first instance of AI misinformation this election cycle. Florida Governor and then Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis posted a campaign video in June 2023 including apparently fake images of Trump hugging former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci. Earlier this year, a political consultant utilized artificial intelligence-generated robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice to voters ahead of New Hampshire’s presidential primary, suggesting that voting in the primary would preclude voters from casting ballots in November.

A new study by Parsons and the CAI, published Wednesday, found that a large majority of respondents (94%) are concerned that the spread of misinformation will impact the upcoming election, and 87% of respondents said that the rise of generative AI has made it more challenging to discern fact from fiction online. The data was collected from 2,002 responses from U.S. citizens, all of whom were 18 and older.

“I don’t think there’s anything that 93% of the American public agrees on, but apparently this is one of them, and I think there’s a good reason for that,” said Hany Farid, professor at the University of California, Berkeley and advisor to the CAI. “There are people on both sides creating fake content, people denying real content, and suddenly you go online like, ‘What? What do I make of anything?’”

A bipartisan group of lawmakers  introduced legislation Tuesday that would prohibit political campaigns and outside political groups from using AI to pretend to be politicians. Multiple state legislatures have now also introduced bills regulating deepfakes in elections.

Parsons believes now is a “true tipping point” in which “consumers are demanding transparency.” But in the absence of significant laws or effective technological guardrails, there are things you can do to protect yourself from AI misinformation heading into November, researchers say.

One key tactic is to not rely on social media for election news. “Getting off social media is step number one, two, three, four, and five; it is not a place to get reliable information,” says Farid. You should view X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook as spaces for fun, not spaces to “become an informed citizen,” he says.

Since social media is where many deepfakes and AI misinformation disseminate, informed citizens must fact check their information with sites like Politifact, factcheck.org, and Snopes, or major media outlets, before reposting. “The fact is: more likely than not you’re part of the problem, not the solution,” Farid says. “If you want to be an informed citizen, fantastic. But that also means not poisoning the minds of people, and going to serious outlets doing fact checks.”

Another strategy is to carefully examine the images you’re seeing spread online. Kaylyn Jackson Schiff and Daniel Schiff, assistant professors of political science at Purdue University, are working on a database tracking politically-relevant deepfakes. They say technology has made it harder than ever for consumers to be proactive and spot the differences between AI-generated content and reality. Still, they have found in their research that many of the popular deepfakes they study are “lower quality” than real photos.

“We’ll go to conferences and people say, ‘Well, I knew those were fake. I knew that Trump wasn’t meeting with Putin.’ But we don’t know if this works for everybody,” Daniel Schiff says. “We know that the images that can be created can be super persuasive to coin-flip levels of accuracy detection by the public.” And as the technology advances, that’s only going to become more difficult, and the strategy may “not work in two years or three years,” he says.

To help users evaluate what they’re seeing online, the CAI is working to implement “Content Credentials,” which they describe as a “nutrition label” for digital content, carrying verifiable metadata like the date and time the content was created, edited, and signaling whether and how AI may have been used. Still, researchers agree that reestablishing public faith in trusted information will need to be a multifaceted effort—including regulations, technology, and consumer media literacy. Says Farid: “There is no silver bullet.”

Voting for Local Government Opens in Indian-Controlled Kashmir

INDIA-KASHMIR-VOTE

SRINAGAR, India — A three-phased election for choosing a local government in Indian-controlled Kashmir opened early Wednesday in the first such vote since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped the disputed region of its special status five years ago.

Authorities deployed thousands of additional police and paramilitary soldiers in the region’s seven southern districts where over 2.3 million residents are eligible to cast their votes and chose 24 lawmakers out of 219 candidates in the first phase of the polling.

Wearing riot gears and carrying assault rifles, troops set up checkpoints and patrolled the constituencies in the districts as locals lined up to cast their votes in villages and towns.

The second and third phases are scheduled for Sept. 25 and Oct. 1 in a process that is staggered to allow troops to move around to stop potential violence. Votes will be counted on Oct. 8, with results expected that day.

For the first time, authorities limited access of foreign media to polling stations and denied press credentials to most journalists working with international media, including to The Associated Press, without citing any reason.

India and Pakistan each administer part of Kashmir, but both claim the territory in its entirety. Militants in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir have been fighting New Delhi’s rule since 1989. Most Muslim Kashmiris support the rebels’ goal of uniting the territory, either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

India insists the Kashmir militancy is Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Pakistan denies the charge, and most Kashmiris consider it a legitimate freedom struggle. Tens of thousands of civilians, rebels and government forces have been killed in the conflict.

The vote is the first in a decade, and the first since Modi’s Hindu nationalist government in 2019 scrapped the Muslim-majority region’s semi-autonomy, downgraded the former state to a federally governed territory and stripped its separate constitution and inherited protections on land and jobs. It was also divided into two federal territories, Ladakh and Jammu-Kashmir, ruled directly by New Delhi, allowing it to appoint administrators to run the territories along unelected bureaucrats and security personnel.

Many people said they knew their votes won’t solve the dispute over Kashmir, but provided a rare window to express their frustration with direct Indian control.

Aamir Ahmed, a first-time voter in Pulwama town, said it was important to elect a local representative “who does not condone wrongdoing.”

“We have witnessed a lot of suffering in the last 10 years,” Ahmed said.

Another voter, 80-year-old farmer Ali Mohammad Alai, said he had been “reduced to penury by the Modi government” after authorities took away his land given to him decades ago for cultivation by the local administration. “All I want is to get that land back,” he said. “Our own government can do that.”

People in the Kashmir Valley had layered rights to use of land since reforms in the 1950s that mainly gave Muslim farmers possession of land they tilled for the minority Hindu rulers and its elite. Some of those rights were rescinded after 2019 changes.

Long lines of voters stretched around some polling booths as the day progressed. The region’s chief electoral officer said about 41% turnout was recorded as of 1 p.m.

In Kishtwar town, multiple voters said they hoped the polling would culminate in a government that cared about economic development and addressed their main issues. “Be it BJP or some other party or a coalition, we urgently want development and better life. Politics can wait,” said Chander Jeet Sharma, 49.

The multistage election will allow Kashmir to have its own truncated government and a local legislature, called an assembly, instead of remaining under New Delhi’s direct rule. A chief minister will head a council of ministers in the government.

However, there will be a limited transition of power from New Delhi to the local assembly as Kashmir will continue to be a “Union Territory” — directly controlled by the federal government — with India’s Parliament remaining its main legislator. The elected government will have partial control over areas like education, culture and taxation but not over the police. Kashmir’s statehood must be restored for the new government to have powers similar to other states of India.

Multiple local parties have campaigned on promises to fight for reversal of 2019 changes and address other key issues like rising unemployment and inflation in the region where locals have struggled amid curtailed civil liberties particularly after the revocation of the special status.

India’s ruling BJP, however, has vowed to block any move aimed at undoing those changes but promised to help in the region’s economic development.

The region’s last assembly election was held in 2014, after which Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party for the first time ruled in a coalition with the local Peoples Democratic Party. But the government collapsed in 2018, after BJP withdrew from the coalition.

Polls in the past have been marked with violence, boycotts and vote-rigging, even though India called them a victory over separatism.

Breaking Down the Charges Against Diddy

Giggs And Diddy Perform At O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire In A Special One Night Only Event

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, the music mogul who has been embroiled in multiple legal battles over allegations of physical or sexual abuse, has been indicted on three counts of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Combs was arrested on Monday night in New York, and the federal indictment was unsealed on Tuesday. The indictment alleges that Combs “abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.” It accuses Combs of “creating a criminal enterprise” that included sex trafficking, forced labor, and kidnapping, among other crimes.

Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, said outside the courthouse on Tuesday that Combs would plead not guilty to the charges, the Associated Press reports.

Combs allegedly manipulated women to participate in sexual activity with male sex workers, forcing them to participate by giving them narcotics, controlling their careers, and using violence, among other tactics, according to the indictment. The indictment describes various incidents of alleged abuse dating back to 2008, including one apparent reference to an attack on his ex-girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016. Combs’ arrest came after federal agents raided his homes in Los Angeles and Miami in March as part of the investigation, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Since November 2023, Combs has been sued by multiple people who have accused him of abuse, including Cassie, born Casandra Ventura. Ventura and Combs reached a settlement in November, just one day after she filed her lawsuit, although Combs denied the allegations at the time. But in May, CNN released CCTV footage that showed Combs punching and kicking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016, prompting Combs to release a video statement on Instagram in which he admitted to assaulting Ventura.

Two other women filed lawsuits in November, accusing the music mogul of sexual assault, beatings, and forced drugging in the early 1990s. Another women sued Combs in December, alleging that he and two other men raped her when she was 17 in 2003.

Moo Deng Is Booked and Busy as Zoo Cuts Meet-and-Greet Hours for Safety Reasons

Getting a glance at the rosy-cheeked Moo Deng, a two-month old pygmy hippopotamus that has made her stamp online, may now be the most popular pastime for Thai locals. And with her new celebrity, Moo Deng garnered the support of Thailand Sephora, which posted an advertisement showing people how to wear their blush like the celebrity hippo.

But sometimes fame comes with a price. Opportunity to see the adorable little creature will now be more difficult as the Khao Kheow Open Zoo has decided to limit the time people can see the baby hippo for safety reasons.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Moving forward, visitors will have a 5-minute timeframe to see Moo Deng, whose name translates to “bouncy pig” or “pork patty,” and can only visit her on weekends, under a new policy announced by the zoo on Saturday. The Thai zoo apologized for the inconvenience.

The new regulations come amid reports of visitors acting inappropriately around Moo Deng— throwing shellfish, water, and other objects at the fresh-faced baby hippo.

Visitors have been flocking to the zoo after viral videos featuring Moo Deng—who was born on July 10—garnered tens of millions of views on TikTok, with fan pages for the tiny four-legged baby hippo also launching on other social media platforms such as X. Khao Kheow Open Zoo Director Narongwit Chodchoy says that the number of visitors stopping by the zoo has increased by at least 30%.

Chodchoy previously said of objects being thrown at Moo Deng: “These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous.” He also said Thursday that he would consider taking legal action against visitors who do not cooperate. The zoo has installed CCTV cameras to make sure Moo Deng is safe.

Pygmy hippos are smaller than the common hippopotamus and are less aquatic. Their body excretes a pink fluid that gives the animal a wet appearance to prevent sunburns, according to the San Diego Zoo. They are an endangered species, as some 3,000, or even less, remain in the wild.

Uncertainty Is Uncomfortable, and Technology Makes It Worse. That Doesn’t Have to Be a Bad Thing

On July 19, 2024, a single-digit error in the software update of cybersecurity company CrowdStrike grounded international airlines, halted emergency medical treatments, and paralyzed global commerce. The expansive network that had enabled CrowdStrike to access information from over a trillion events every day and prevent more than 75,000 security breaches every year, had ironically introduced a new form of uncertainty of colossal significance. The impact of a seemingly minor error in the code was now at risk of being exponentially magnified by the network, unleashing the kind of global havoc.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

The very mechanism that had reduced the uncertainty of regular cyber threats had concurrently increased the unpredictability of a rare global catastrophe—and with it, the deepening cracks in our relationship with uncertainty and technology.

Our deep-seated discomfort with uncertainty—a discomfort rooted not in just in technology but in our very biology—was vividly demonstrated in a 2017 experiment where London-based researchers gave consenting volunteers painful electric shocks to the hand while measuring physiological markers of distress. Knowing there was only 50-50 chance of receiving the shock agitated the volunteers far more than knowing the painful shock was imminent, highlighting how much more unsettling uncertainty can be compared to the certainty of discomfort.

This drive to eliminate uncertainty has long been a catalyst for technological progress and turned the wheels of innovation. From using fire to dispel the fear of darkness to mechanizing agriculture to guarantee food abundance, humanity’s innovations have consistently aimed to turn uncertainty into something controllable and predictable on a global scale.

Read More: Here’s Why Uncertainty Makes You So Miserable

But much like energy, uncertainty can be transformed but never destroyed. When we think we have removed it, we have merely shifted it to a different plane. This gives rise to the possibility of an intriguing paradox: With each technological advancement designed to reduce uncertainty, do we inadvertently introduce new uncertainties, making the world even more unpredictable?

Automated algorithms have revolutionized financial trading at an astronomical scale by shattering human limits on speed, precision and accuracy. Yet, in the process of eliminating human error and decoding complex probabilities in foreign exchange trading, these systems have introduced new uncertainties of their own—uncertainties too intricate for human comprehension. What once plagued day-to-day trading with human-scale uncertainty has morphed into technology-scale risks that didn’t exist before. By lowering some forms of uncertainty, these automated algorithms have ultimately increased it.

A striking example of this is algorithmic trading, where software is used to eradicate uncertainty and upgrade financial systems. It is, however, impossible to test sophisticated permutation of every pathway in a software decision tree, meaning that even the most sophisticated upgrades inevitably introduce new uncertainties. Subtle errors, camouflaged in labyrinthine webs of code, become imperceptible at the lightning speed of execution. In August 2012, when the NYSE’s Retail Liquidity Program went live, global financial services firm Knight Capital was equipped with a high-frequency trading algorithm. Unfortunately, an overnight glitch in the code amplified the error to a disastrous degree, costing Knight Capital $440 million in just 30 minutes.

As technology becomes more sophisticated, it not only eradicates the uncertainty of time and distance from our everyday lives but also transforms how we experience uncertainty itself. An app informs you exactly when the bus you are waiting for will arrive, a check mark tells you when your friend has not only received but read your message, and a ding lets you know someone is waiting on your doorstep when you are on vacation on a different continent. This information is often incredibly useful. Yet, the same technology floods us with unsolicited, irrelevant details. Worse, it often captures our attention by delivering fragments of incomplete information: a partial news headline pops up on our phone, an alert from our home security system reports unusual activity on our property, a new friend request slides into our social media inbox. Resolving these uncertainties requires us to swipe, click, or watch, only to be bombarded with yet another stream of incomplete information. Instead of resolving uncertainty, the information often leaves us with more of it.

Rarely do we stop to ask ourselves if the kinds of frequent, small-scale uncertainties that modern technology is designed to eliminate are really so terrible in the first place. If we did, we might realize that human-scale uncertainties make us more resilient, revealing weaknesses we did not know we had.

Historical evidence suggests that eliminating uncertainty isn’t always beneficial. Angkor, the medieval capital of the ancient Khmer empire, became the largest pre-industrial city in the world partly because its population was able to tame the uncertainty of nature through creating an elaborate water management network. This system eliminated the unpredictability of monsoon rains, sustaining Angkor’s agrarian population, which grew to nearly a million. Yet this very system may also have contributed to the city’s collapse. When Angkor was struck by severe droughts and violent monsoons in the 14th and 15th centuries, their reliance on guaranteed water supplies left its people vulnerable to disaster.

The uncertainty paradox does not stem from innovation in itself. Innovating solutions for large scale uncertainties has manifestly saved countless lives. Modern day examples include Sanitation technology that has helped to eradicate cholera in many parts of the world and Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) technology that protected the Taipei 101 skyscraper during a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in 2024. Instead, the uncertainty paradox seems to emerge when we seek to erase smaller scale,  everyday uncertainties entirely from our lives. This can make us more vulnerable, as we forget how to deal with unexpected uncertainty when it finally strikes. One solution is to deliberately create opportunities to experience and rehearse dealing with uncertainty. Hong Kong’s resilience in the face of intense typhoons stems from regular exposure to monsoon rains—preparing the city to withstand storms that could devastate other parts of the world.

Netflix engineers Yury Izrailevsky and Ariel Tseitlin captured this idea in their creation of “Chaos Monkey,” a tool that deliberately introduces system failures so engineers can identify weaknesses and build better recovery mechanisms. Inspired by this concept, many organizations now conduct “uncertainty drills” to prepare for unexpected challenges. However, while drills prepare us for the known scenarios, true resilience requires training our reactions to uncertainty itself—not just our responses to specific situations. Athletes and Navy SEALS incorporate deliberate worst-case scenarios in their training to build mental fortitude and adaptability in the face of the unknown.

The relationship between uncertainty and technology is like an Ouroboros: we create technology to eliminate uncertainty, yet that technology generates new uncertainties that we must eliminate all over again. Rather than trying to break this cycle, the solution may be paradoxical: to make the world feel more certain, we might need to embrace a little more uncertainty every day.

Why Does the U.S. Use Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight savings concept

Why does the U.S. Use Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time has been legally enforced in the U.S. on-and-off since 1918, when congress passed the Standard Time Act. The law set the boundaries for the various time zones in the U.S. The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to maximize use of sunlight hours in the Northern hemisphere during the summer months, when the sun typically rises earlier.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Read More: Is the U.S. Ending Daylight Saving Time?

When will Daylight Saving Time end this year?

Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday of November every year. This year, it will end on Sunday, Nov. 3—meaning we will gain an hour of sleep. It will restart on Mar. 9 when the clocks spring forward.

Where is Daylight Saving Time observed?

Daylight Saving Time is implemented in all U.S. states except Arizona and Hawaii. Versions of Daylight Saving are also observed, or partially observed, in many other countries—including most of Europe, Mongolia, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Israel, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, French Guiana, Cuba, and Haiti.

Why is Daylight Saving Time controversial?

Multiple legislators have attempted to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and halt the biannual practice of adjusting clocks back and forth. Researchers have observed an increase in traffic accidents, medical errors, heart attacks, and strokes on the days when the clocks change.

Senator Marco Rubio introduced the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, which would make Daylight Saving permanent, even throughout the winter months. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate, but it has yet to be voted on in the House of Representatives.
